Their best choice was to avoid a classic narrative structure, there's no typical beginning or ending, it's just a few weeks in the lives of the characters. The story may be cliched but the characters and the actors portraying them give it a vitality. I'm a big fan of underwriting characters, it allows the viewer to fill in the blanks and you become a lot more invested than if a screenwriter is shoving their idea of a great character down your throat. The Dardennes tell us almost nothing about the people in this story which is probably why I found them so engaging. The backstories forming in my mind are probably totally different to those of any ten other people who might watch this.
Doret is incredible, a non-actor who was plucked off the street. There are very few great child actors as they almost inevitably make the the mistake of acting above their years, coming across as small adults rather than children. Doret makes no such mistake, possibly because he simply doesn't know how. He's completely natural and his awkward, uncomfortable movements are perfect for the character. I usually despise child characters in films but I was absolutely behind this one. It sounds crazy but the three best performances of the year so far have come from two twenty year old actresses and a twelve year old amateur.
After a somewhat failed stint in English language productions, De France is back on home soil and should stay there as she won't get many roles as good as this in the anglicized world. With her muscular arms she looks like she could beat up any grown man but plausibly struggles to control Doret in his wilder moments.
Kitchen sink dramas like this aren't usually known for being easy on the eye but Alain Marcoen's cinematography is full of eye-popping colour, proving that grittiness doesn't have to equal ugliness.
The Dardennes end this in a way which will likely aggravate many viewers but I found it a perfect denouement.

LOS ANGELES, March 15 (TheWrap.com) - Rush Limbaugh joined Twitter on Thursday, posting the first two tweets from his personal account in response to the scandal plaguing his show.
Limbaugh, who already had an official account for his show, posted links to recent stories that have been supportive of the combative radio host.
The brash talker has had the account since 2009, but he told his listeners on Thursday that he would be tweeting to mobilize his supporters just like the "liberal media" has mobilized his detractors.
Limbaugh has been at the center of a media maelstrom for the last few weeks since he called Georgetown law student and contraception activist Sandra Fluke a "slut" and a "prostitute" on his radio show.
"Everybody has been asking me what they can do to help in all of this, and I've been saying, nah, just do what you've been doing just, if you listen, keep listening, that's fine, but there's an army out there that wants to be mobilized, and so, I figured, use Twitter for it. I'm just going to put some things on Twitter that you can help us circulate. It's that simple you just retweet them!"
Limbaugh first tweeted a link to a story by Cornell Law School professor William Jacobson about, to quote Limbaugh, "how the opposition astroturfs advertisers." Jacobson linked the 100-plus advertisers boycotting Limbaugh to Media Matters, the liberal group that functions as a watchdog of the conservative media.
Next Limbaugh tweeted a story from the Daily Caller, a conservative outlet, about how the New York Times aired an ad during Limbaugh's show.
Limbaugh already had more than 100,000 followers before Thursday - a sign of his massive popularity without even tweeting.
Limbaugh told his audience on Thursday that he won't be a daily tweeter. And, sorry, fans, he won't be tweeting about his breakfast and what not.

The number of Broadband connections provided by the end of December 2011 are 13.35 million.?As per the objectives contained in draft National Telecom Policy 2012, it is proposed to Provide affordable and reliable broadband on demand by the year 2015 and to achieve 175 million broadband connections by the year 2017 and 600 million by the year 2020 at minimum 2 Mbps download speed and making available higher speeds of at least 100 Mbps on demand.
Following schemes being implemented under Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF), will further increase the broadband internet penetration in rural areas:
Rural Wireline Broadband Scheme
BSNL will provide 8, 88,832 wire-line Broadband connections to individual users and Government Institutions over a period of 5-years in this scheme. As on February 2012, a total of 3,54,595 broadband connections have been provided.
a) ?Optical Fibre Network Augmentation, Creation and Management of Intra-District SDHQ-DHQ OFC Network in ASSAM?
This OFC Scheme would connect 354 locations in 27 Districts of Assam within 18 months from 12/2/2010. As of February 2012, about 177 nodes have been installed.
b) ?Optical Fibre Network Augmentation, Creation and Management of Intra-District SDHQ-DHQ OFC Network in NE-I Circle (comprising states of Meghalaya, Mizoram & Tripura),? The States of Meghalaya, Mizoram & Tripura have been taken up for OFC augmentation in this scheme. This OFC Scheme would connect 188 locations in 19 Districts within 24 months from the date of signing of the Agreement.
c) ?Optical Fibre Network Augmentation, Creation and Management of Intra-District SDHQ-DHQ OFC Network in NE-II Circle (comprising states of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur & Nagaland),? The States of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur & Nagaland have been taken up for OFC augmentation in this scheme. This OFC Scheme would connect 407 locations in 30 Districts within 30 months from the date of signing of the Agreement. National Optical Fibre Network
The scheme of National Optical Fiber Network (NOFN) is being implemented, for providing Broadband connectivity to Panchayats. The objective is to extend the existing optical fiber network to Panchayats by utilizing the Universal Services Obligation Fund (USOF). This information was given in Lok Sabha today by Shri Milind Deora, the Minister of State, Communication and Information Technology in response to a question.

?I started out as a social worker doing home studies, in-home support for DCF children and their foster/adoptive families, and educational classes.? After a couple of years, I became the clinical supervisor, in charge of training and supervising all the clinical staff members.

TACOMA, Wash. -- A 3-year-old boy accidentally killed himself with a gun as a 4-year-old sat next to him in a car, police in Tacoma reported Wednesday, the third recent shooting of a child in?Washington state.
The car was parked at a?gas station?just after midnight Wednesday?when the boy's mom got out to buy some items and her boyfriend went to fuel the car, leaving his gun inside, NBC affiliate KING5 TV reported.
Police believe the boy then got out of a car seat, grabbed the gun and shot himself. The man's 4-year-old daughter was also in the car, though she was not hurt.
The family, who have not been identified by police,?is believed to be from the Tacoma area and the boyfriend does have a concealed weapons permit, KING5 reported.
Tacoma police officer Naveed Benjamin said the man had put his pistol under a seat.
Detectives called the shooting a tragic accident, Benjamin said.
The shooting follows the death of the 7-year-old daughter of a police officer in Stanwood, Wash.,?on Saturday when a sibling found a gun and fired while the parents were out of their car.
And on Feb. 22, an 8-year-old girl was critically wounded in a Bremerton classroom when a gun fired from the backpack of a 9-year-old boy as he put it on a desk.
"It's another tragedy in a very short period of time," Benjamin said. "It is incredible in light of the other ones. You would think people would take more care, not less."
"You can't predict what children are going to do," he added. "You need to unload and lock it up if you're not carrying it."
"And keep it out of the hands of children," Benjamin said. "It's really not that hard to practice firearm safety."
