Chavez: China may surpass US as No.1 trade partner (AP)

CARACAS, Venezuela ? Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez says China could surpass the U.S. as his country's No. 1 trade partner due to a strategic alliance between Venezuela and China.

Chavez says trade between the two countries has reached $20 billion this year, up from $600 million just over a decade ago. It is growing at a rate of $2 billion a year.

Chavez sees Venezuela's growing ties with China as vital to his country's economic development. China is Venezuela's second biggest trading partner.

Trade between the United States and Venezuela has reached $33.5 billion so far this year, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
